No ads, no clutter — just the video.

KPlayer plays common video and music files right away, without installing any codecs. The screen shows only the video; the controls appear only when you move the mouse. Subtitles load automatically by the video's name, and the volume stays even.

Latest 1.3.0 · Installer · Portable

No codecs to install

Subtitles load on their own

Only what watching needs

No codecs to install

Plays videos such as MP4 · MKV · AVI · MOV · WMV · WebM · TS · M2TS · VOB · RMVB, music such as MP3 · FLAC · AAC · M4A · WAV · OGG · Opus · WMA · APE · DSF, and M3U · PLS playlists right away. Hardware acceleration keeps high-resolution video smooth.

Drop it and it plays

Drop files on the main window to replace the playlist and play at once; drop them on the playlist window to add them to the end. Folders are scanned including subfolders for playable files, and a dropped subtitle file is attached to the current video.

Subtitles that read well

SMI · SRT · ASS · VTT subtitles with the video's name load automatically. Change the font, size, color, outline, shadow, vertical position and alignment, and the playing video updates at once.

Find the exact scene

Speed from 0.25× to 4×, 1-second and frame-by-frame steps, chapter skipping and rotation — and S saves the current scene as JPG · PNG.

Even out the volume

Volume normalization is on by default: quiet dialogue gets louder, loud effects get softer. Pick from three strengths. Music without cover art is shown as a spinning record with the track title.

Make it yours

Assign any function to shortcuts and mouse actions (click · double-click · middle button · wheel · back/forward buttons). Always on top, remembered window position, and dragging an edge with Shift held resizes while keeping the video's aspect ratio.

How do I…

I want to replace the playlist / add to the end of it

Drop files on the main window to clear the playlist, replace it with the dropped files and play at once. Drop them on the playlist window to keep the current list and add them to the end, playing from the first new file. Files already in the list are not added twice.

I want to open several files from File Explorer

Select several files and press Enter: they gather in the KPlayer window that is already open and play from the first file. Set Settings → General → If already running to Add to running playlist to keep the current video and only add them to the list, or to Allow multiple to open a new window for each file.

I want to shuffle my music

Turn on the shuffle button in the playlist window. No track plays twice until the whole list has played, then it shuffles again. Previous file (PgUp) goes back in the order you actually listened.

I want to repeat one track

Each click on the repeat button in the playlist window cycles No repeat → Repeat all → Repeat one. Repeat one takes priority even when shuffle is on.

I keep files from a USB stick or network drive in the playlist

Removing the drive does not remove them from the list; they are shown with their full path. When their turn comes, "File not found" appears briefly and the next file plays. To clear out files that are really gone, use − → Missing files in the playlist window.

Subtitles are too small or hard to read

Change the size, font, bold, text color, outline and shadow in Settings → Subtitles. Changes show on the playing video at once, so adjust while you watch. To move subtitles down into the black bar below the video, change Vertical position. To show styled ASS subtitles exactly as the file defines them, turn on Prefer subtitle file style.

I want to choose the subtitle language

If there are several subtitle tracks, switch with J / Shift+J. To set which language is picked first, enter them in order in Settings → Subtitles → Preferred subtitle languages, like ja,jpn,en,eng.

I want to watch lectures or meetings faster

C speeds up by 0.1×, X slows down, ] / [ change by 10%, and Z returns to 1.0×. The current speed appears briefly in the middle of the screen each time.

I want a small window while doing something else

Click the pin button in the top bar to keep the window above all others (the playlist window too). Press 1 to shrink the window to 50% of the video size; 2 · 3 · 4 give 100% · 150% · 200%.

The volume jumps around between videos

Volume normalization is on by default. To even it out more, set Settings → Audio → Normalization strength to Strong; to hear the original sound, set Use volume normalization to Off.

I want the wheel to seek instead of changing the volume

In Settings → Mouse, set Wheel up · Wheel down to Seek forward · Seek backward. You can also assign functions to single click, double click, the middle button and the back/forward buttons.

I want videos to open in KPlayer when I double-click them

Check the extensions in Settings → File types. On Windows 10 · 11 you have to choose the default app yourself, so extensions whose default app is another program are marked Not applied. Click the mark to open Windows' default app picker and choose KPlayer.

Free. Anywhere, no strings attached.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install codecs?

No. Everything needed for playback is included. KPlayer is built on the open-source playback engine libmpv, so there is no other program or codec pack to install.

Which files can it play?

Video: MP4 · MKV · AVI · MOV · WMV · FLV · WebM · M4V · MPG · MPEG · M2V · TS · TP · TRP · M2TS · MTS · VOB · ASF · RM · RMVB · OGV · 3GP · DivX. Music: MP3 · FLAC · AAC · M4A · WAV · OGG · Opus · WMA · APE · AIFF · MKA · DSF. Playlists: M3U · M3U8 · PLS. Subtitles: SMI · SRT · ASS · SSA · VTT · SUB/IDX · SUP.

Are there ads? Does it cost anything?

There are no ads and it is free. It is freeware you can use without restriction at work, at home, in government offices and schools, and share freely.

Can subtitles show from the start?

If a file has subtitles, they show from the start (Settings → Subtitles → Show subtitles by default). Turn them off and on with the subtitle button at the bottom or V. Subtitle files in the same folder whose names contain the video name load automatically; change the scope in Auto-load external subtitles.

Where are settings and the playlist saved?

In KPlayer.ini · KPlayer.lst in the same folder as the program. Move the portable folder and your settings and playlist come along; file associations follow the new location the next time it runs.

What does it send over the internet?

At startup it checks for a new version (version · language · a random ID for counting). If the program crashes, it sends an error report to help find the cause; this includes a log of recent actions (with names of opened files, the user folder name hidden). Playback itself works without the internet.

How is the display language chosen?

At first it follows the Windows display language, and falls back to English if that language is not supported. Change it in Settings → General → Language to apply it at once; the preferred subtitle language follows the display language too.

I want to restore the default settings

Click Reset at the bottom left of Settings to return all settings, shortcuts and mouse actions to their defaults. The display language and file associations stay as they are.
